What the Witte Museum covers

What the Witte Museum covers

The Witte Museum explores Texas through natural history, science and culture, with its galleries organized around Land, Sky and Water. Its 10-acre campus sits between the San Antonio River and Broadway, within Brackenridge Park.

Start with the Naylor Family Dinosaur Gallery for animals from the Cretaceous Period, more than 110 million years ago, in what is now Texas. The McLean Family Texas Wild Gallery shifts the focus to more than 150 Texas animals and environments from across the state.

The campus also includes three historic houses moved there in the 1940s: the Francisco Ruiz House, the Celso Navarro House and the John Twohig House. The museum opened on October 8, 1926, after San Antonio businessman Alfred G. Witte left $65,000 for a museum in Brackenridge Park; the city matched the bequest with another $65,000.
